When I was a little kid, Morton Gould's Deserted Ballroom scared me. I've loved it ever since. Gould himself has recorded Deserted Ballroom, both in a piano version and in the orchestral version. His tempi are quite fast compared to Mantovani's. In the piano version it works (and emphasizes the boogie-woogie element of the middle section that only a piano can do), but in the orchestral version, not so much. The fast tempo however does show a stylistic similarity to similar miniature light compositions by Raymond Scott, especially his Powerhouse; a famous tune to those who know their Warner Bros. cartoons.
BTW, you REALLY don't want to miss the incredible performance of Schubert's Schöne Müllerin sung by Michael Schade that I have in the On Demand version of this show. Really, you don't.
