Remember Popeye cigarettes? The candy that the tobacco industry sanctioned to get young folk ready and eager to try real smokes? Wasn't it cool puffing out wisps of sugar dust? The Spanish brought tobacco to the Old World in 1559, and since then, the world has enjoyed smoker's hack and a plethora of lung diseases. But in 17th Century France, tobacco was all the rage; which is why a popular song was written about the nicotine plant. It's the basis of the Corrette composition in today's program. Less toxic fare can be found in the Bartók and Ravel programmed along side. Stay healthy my friends.
