Part 1 - Remembering David Johansen (1950-2025)

David Johansen, who died on February 28 at age 75, was a singer and actor who first gained fame in the early-1970s as lead singer of the proto-punk glam band, The New York Dolls. In the mid-1980s, he began performing jazz, jump blues and novelty songs as his lounge singer alter-ego Buster Poindexter. And, in the 1990s, he started performing traditional folk and blues and formed a band called David Johansen & The Harry Smiths.

Wow! What a surprise? I wouldn't have expected this on Stranger Songs. But, as you once said, expect all sorts of surprises (in all musical directions). Although, I wouldn't expect to play Kiss... oh, non, dont, Mike! ;)

Amazing how many voices and characters David came up with after NYD. Always loved Saturday Night Fish Fry. Thanks for that one. Then again I absolutely loved all his incarnations, characters and music from the post NYD period !!! This is the best, Mike !!!

You play Kiss, Mike and I will reconsider therapy for the damage it would do to me with the resulting disorientation hahahaha

Mike Regenstreif (host)
Thanks Neil. Stranger Songs will remain a Kiss-free zone.

Although Kiss (and Elton John) was my first love. From age of 5 to 10. I was in the Kiss Army! T-shirts, sweatshirts, posters... I saw them in 1977 at the Montréal Forum. I dont regret any of it!

Hi Bc, I don't fault anyone for their ephemeral or permanent taste in music. I was an adult folkie when Kiss came along. So I missed the appeal. BTW, I do like a fair bit of Elton's music.

On the Morning show early this morning on CTV they had a short online video of a woman 102 years old on stage tap dancing for a room full of seniors much younger than her with a huge grin on her face. She does this at all kinds of seniors centres. She was amazing........no easy thing to tap dance, man !!

Neil, was she doing the Charleston?

N & DL
Yup I saw Kiss and Elton. I have full bore eclectic taste in music. I pretty much love the entire spectrum in varying degrees.

Drake's Dad
Thanks for that Shirley Eikhard "Emily Remembers", Mike. I lost my beloved grandmother and my favourite aunt (second Mom) to alzeimers. And now at 14 and a half (86), I am also losing Drake to the same insidious disease. All you can do is be there for them with patience and an open heart. A truly beautiful song that captures that journey.

I hear you, Neil. Alzheimer's has touched my family, too. Sorry to hear that Drake is experiencing it. Pets are very special friends and family members.
