50 years ago, I took over The Golem, Part 2

It was just over 50 years ago, on May 24, 1974, that I took over running The Golem, a Montreal folk club. All of the songs on this show were played back in the day by artists who performed during my two tenures running the Golem – from 1974 until 1976 and from 1981 until 1987. "50 years ago, I took over The Golem, Part 1" was broadcast on May 28 and can be streamed at this link. https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/595/65341.html The first half-hour of the June 25 show will conclude this theme. The Montreal Gazette photo is of me pinning up photos of artists coming to play at The Golem in the fall of 1987. Click on LISTEN NOW to hear this show. Hey Mike, It's been many years but I wanted to stop by and thank you for all you've done for so long in service to musicians and the music. I played at a lot of places across Canada and the U.S., and some in Europe back in the day, and I have to say the Golem was one of the best places to play. You always treated us so well and the audience was great. It was one of the best "listening" rooms. I retired from the road about 20 years ago but I'm still writing songs from tome to time. I'll send you some.

Wow! Connie Kaldor! I'm honored to be in the same playlist chat! But not surprised by the comments about Mike. He is the Caretaker of Folk.

Hi Robert, That wasn't Connie Kaldor commenting. She's still performing and will be part of Part 3 heard at the beginning of next week's show. The CK commenting is of the male persuasion.

Oops, my bad. Not gonna try. Her portrait is in the picture. Freudian slip. Not gonna try and guess the male CK, for fear of more shame. However, I am pretty sure it's not Calvin Klein!

I moved to Montreal in 1982 to go to McGill and spent many a memorable night at the Golem listening to Nanci Griffith, Stan Rogers, Garnet Rogers, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Stephen Barry, Jackie Washington, Chris Rawlings and so many, many others. Thanks for these trips down memory lane.

looked up Golem...

Hillbilly, I don't think I would have chosen The Golem as the name of a folk club. The Golem started in 1973 and the name was well established when I took over in '74.

The stories from your club days enthrall me, Mike. My club was not as storied as yours; but these 2 special shows certainly bring back many fond memories for me. If my name was Spock........you would be the first person I would "mind meld" with. Thanks for another amazing show today!

Thanks Neil. I'll wind up this exercise in personal nostalgia in the first half-hour of next week's show.
