Stranger Songs

50 years ago, I took over The Golem, Part 1

It was just over 50 years ago, on May 24, 1974, that I took over running The Golem, a Montreal folk club. All of the songs on this show were played back in the day by artists who performed during my two tenures running the Golem – from 1974 until 1976 and from 1981 until 1987. The photo is me on stage at the Golem in 1975. Another show, featuring many more of the Golem performers, will be heard on the June 18 edition of Stranger Songs. I love flashbacks, Mike. looking forward to the show today. Even if it reminds me that the only way to truly know my age is to cut off my leg and count the rings lol. Thanks for the curating!

Great show. So many artists that you've introduced/reintroduced me to. I like to think that in an alternate timeline I spent all my time at The Golem, listening to all of my heroes. Your show is the next best thing. And I can hear them whenever I want. Peace, Mike.

FYI, Mike, Stan Rogers was celebrated this past Sunday and Monday on Iain Anderson's show on BBC Radio Scotland, showing just how far his fame spread and how well he's remembered.

Such a sweet trip down Memory Lane, Mike. Thank you!! Reminds me how much I miss the old Ottawa Folk Festival when it was out at Britannia Park! Mark did a great job resurrecting the festival as City Folk, but it's just not the same vibe. We are so lucky to have historians like you to share past moments in time.

Nanci used to close her shows at the Golem in the '80s with that song. Probably my second favorite of her original songs (after "Banks of the Pontchartrain" which she wrote in my apartment in Montreal).
