The Legacy of Stan Rogers: A postage stamp celebration

The theme for this edition of Stranger Songs is The Legacy of Stan Rogers: A postage stamp celebration. Stan was already one of Canada’s greatest folksingers and songwriters when he died tragically at the young age of 33 on June 2, 1983 in a fire on an Air Canada flight. On July 21, Canada Post issued a postage stamp honouring Stan Rogers and his contributions to Canadian folk music. The songs on this show were all written by Stan. Really great show today, Mike. I was happy to hear you say that "The Mary Ellen Carter" is your favourite of Stan Rogers's songs - it's mine too. I find it very uplifting. Looking forward to next week - those were my High School years, too. Be interested to hear what you were listening to.

In the summer of 1983, I had the chance to join a canoe/camping trip in the Pine Barrens, with a group of local Coffeehouse and folk music venue managers from the Philly/South Jersey area. There was a palpable grief that night as Stan's songs and a bottle of rum were passed around the campfire. The experience inspired me to write an additional verse to Stan's song, Forty-Five Years. I plan to sing it tonight at our Portland Song Circle on Zoom. 4. (Verse and Chorus by Dave Orleans) We've been up half the night by the campfire light, Drinkin' rum and singin' Barrett's Privateers Though our voices resound in the glade all around, Flames flicker and dance through the tears No one's got much to say as the flames die away; there is nothing left for us to do Though our song drowns the night, my friend, all we can hear is you. CHO: And we're just gonna sing it louder than we've ever sung any song before Calling Fingal to rise, block the moon from our eyes And crying out,"What the hell was it for?" After thirty three years we all have a way to make you live again, somehow. We'll be singing your songs, my friend, forty-five years from now. We'll be singing your songs, my friend, forty-five years from now.
