Hi Chris, What an interesting show theme. Like you, I haven’t been to a fairground for a long time. Music has a really unique sound when you are on a ride—being very high up, spinning round and round or even being upside down gives old familiar tunes a whole different sound. Looking forward to tonight’s selection of tunes.

Hi Shelley You're quite right, there's often music playing loudly and it adds to the sensory bombardment.... there aren't too many quiet fairground rides!

Yes I think they are meant to be for the senses—and who can forget the food! We were allowed to eat goodies that were forbidden (or just not available) at any other time of the year.

What was your favourite fairground treat to eat Shelley?

Shelley Ann Morris
I had lots of favourites but for quite awhile you would never see Tiny Tom Donuts anywhere else. They were mini donuts that were baked fresh and coated with cinnamon or powdered sugar—we wouldn’t give a thought to diabetes, heart disease etc. Those were the days……..

Oh boo hoo—this Joni Mitchell song gets me every time.

Tiny Toms :-) In the old days candy floss was usually only found at the fair. And those toffee apples, with their sticky sugary coating stuck to your teeth for the rest of the day! :-)

Oh yeah, candy floss was what I imagine eating a cloud would be like. Candy apples would make little faces and hands (and hair, and clothes) hopelessly sticky! My poor mother!

My grandmother was one for the games. She would spend hours playing them to win stuffed animals for us kids. I still have an orange-and-white striped fish that she won for me many moons ago.

Weren't the games fun: The lyrics of the Hollies' song we played include "she drops the present that she won before, pulling ducks out of the water, got the highest score". (Plastic ducks, that is). Never quite as easy as it looked :-)

Great show as always Chris. Nice walk down memory lane, a great soundtrack for a nostalgic trip to the fairground.

Thanks Shelley :-). The fair's staying in town for a bit longer, so we'll be back here for more thrills soon! :-) Night night everyone

Listening -- and enjoying -- On Demand Thursday afternoon. Great theme -- having seen it on the (then empty) playlist Tuesday morning, I failed on all counts with my guesses as to tracks you might be playing.

Piggybacking on Chris' and Shelley's exchange on fairground treats, growing up in Toronto, my mother, sisters and I made an annual pilgrimage to "The Ex". where a trip to the "Food Building" was a highlight... in the early days, some free samples, generous portions of otherwise inexpensive food and drink... my faves were quarts of Hires root beer in a waxed carton and hot-dogs-on-a-stick (long before I'd ever hear of a "pogo" or corndog").
