Tangerine Dream Interview Pt 1

Tangerine Dream were founded in 1967 by the late Edgar Froese, who died in 2015. Over the past 50+ years since then line-ups have changed, as have the times, the musical trends and the fashions. Within those changes the increased usage of non-acoustic musical instruments has led to innovative artists like Tangerine Dream (TD) extending the boundaries of creative sound colour and texture. In 2005 Thorsten Quaeschning became an official member of the band, having spent a couple of years working with Edgar behind the scenes. In 2011 Japanese violinist Hoshiko Yamane joined TD ; both she and Thorsten were in the TD line-up that played the Ottawa Blues Fest in 2012. Following Edgar's death, Thorsten and Hoshiko have remained ever-present members, whilst London-based member Ulrich Schnauss, originally from Kiel, Germany, and who joined in 2014, has indefinitely stepped back from being an active member of TD. In 2020 Berliner Paul Frick, who was - and who also remains - a member of the electroacoustic trio Brandt, Brauer and Frick, joined Thorsten and Hoshiko to complete the current line-up. In this programme we chat together about the creation of "Raum" and reflect upon their experiences of returning to playing live together after their pandemic enforced hiatus. *Come and say "hello" at the interactive page known as "The Listening Room" (here),

This music is so dreamy……I’m pretty sure I’d heard Tangerine Dream at some point when I started listening to CKCU ‘back in the day.’

Shelley, you almost certainly did, there were several other announcers who I remember hearing playing TD. And back in June 1986 there were 3 1-hour specials on TD in advance of their show at the National Arts Centre. Their studio albums, soundtracks and live recordings, all on "Rockers Anonymous" presented by you know who :-)

The song that’s playing now reminds me of ‘movie’ music! This is absolutely beautiful! This is the song that was heard right after the ad for TD’s performance at the NAC.

That'll be "Song Of The Whale Part 2" Shelley, from 1986's "Underwater Sunlight", one of TD's most popular albums.
