In the fall of 1961, Carleton students first took to the Ottawa airwaves when two local commercial stations agreed to provide slots for student programs. CFRA offered a weekly half-hour program at 8:30 Saturday nights, while CKOY offered a similar opportunity on Sundays. An official Radio Broadcast Committee was formed, made up of students dedicated to producing these weekly shows. On November 8, the very first broadcast of From the Steps went out over CKOY, giving Carleton a presence on Ottawa radio.
