Coversions XV: Robbie Shakespeare and the Roots of Dub in 1975
Chance meeting on roots of bass and a beat
Coversions XV: covers | versions | edits | dubs | remixes
Happy posthumous birthday to Robbie Shakespeare, born today in 1953 in Kingston, Jamaica.
It is impossible to verify, but it is possible that Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare are the world's most recorded musicians. Drums and bass - Sly and Robbie played with everyone in Jamaica and beyond since the 1970s, yet are not household names. If you are familiar with the Standing in the Shadows of Motown documentary, you're on the right track.
Sly & Robbie's official credits measure in the thousands. Unofficially - due to shoddy documentation and crediting / paying studio musicians - it could be exponential. Their riddims have been sampled innumerable times, perhaps to the power of 2 or 3 of the aforementioned. Tack on the production work, and I am out of fingers and toes.
In our hour this week, we'll explore the roots of dub reggae with Basspeare in 1975. It is inconceivable (!) the music that Robbie contributed to at age 21-22.

We close with Delroy Wilson's version of "Get Ready", written by Smokey Robinson, performed by The Temptations in 1966, then Rare Earth in 1970. The bass player on The Temptations recording was James Jamerson. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked Jamerson as the #1 "Greatest Bassist of All Time", while Robbie Shakespeare was the #1 ranked reggae bassist and #17 overall.
It was refreshing to see the list include more non-rock/pop musicians. Notable omissions from my perspective are Holger Czukay, Cecil McBee, John Cale, Meshell Ndegeocello, and Ray Brown. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/50-greatest-bassists-of-all-time-1003022/ |
