Return to the Water
Amanda Rheaume - The Skin I'm In Canadian
Owen Maxwell, Ottawa Life Magazine: “While you definitely explore some modern pop tones this time around I was interested to hear the story behind how you crafted the rich second-half of "Return To The Water" as it sounds like you're being taken under in the audio?”
Amanda Rheaume: “That song was one of the first songs written for the album, and it's definitely less pop, it's more of an album track. The watery sounds came out organically in the last bit of the recording. There was this bridge without lyrics or singing, so I just wanted it to be a soundscape. Whether you were sitting with headphones or in a car, you could feel this rumbling underneath. For me personally that sound represents ancestors from your past, and that they're there always. It came out of a synth too.”
No Tattoo
Kris and Dee - Browse Line Canadian
Dee McNeil: “No Tattoo is actually about the human phenomena of wanting to express yourself, but you’ve got this head full of ideas and are just not able to pull it all together into a thesis – just that overwhelming feeling of information overload. And it came about from having that kind of moment: I had a head full of philosophies and I was reading everything from Plato and Kant and Nietzsche and all that stiff, and Thoreau – I was reading a lot of philosophers at the time and my head was full of ideas and I was struggling to pull something together. I think it’s something that happens for lots of reasons and I think we all experience those moments.” ~ MusicLifeMagazine
I am a Refugee
Sultans of String - Refuge Canadian New
“I wrote the poem for me, for my community, and for those that are yearning for change, those are yearning to deepen their empathy. Writing the poem was a way to unleash some pain that I could name finally – I wrote it because I was so frustrated with so many people sending me emails and asking me what I thought about the travel ban, the first time our American government here shared the first travel ban. And that an artist’s job is to draw that hope, especially in a time of deep hopelessness.”
