Lesson Hear
Wednesday August 14th, 2019 with Bruce Walton
Jonathan Richman/Talking Heads/Angstones

As usual, too little time devoted to artists who deserve more, but a pretty rockin' hour all the same.

Don't Worry About The Government

The 'Modern Lovers' on the next track are not the group heard with Jonathan Richman on "Girlfriend". That band broke up in 1974, mostly because of Richman's desire for a softer sound (check out "Roadrunner", below, for an example of what he wanted to move away from). By the time the first group's lp was released, Richman's 1st lp with his new group, in a wonderful bit of music biz strangeness, had already been out for 3 months. No doubt there were people blown away by the original band's record who went to see J. Richman in 1976 expecting something other than what they got.

The Angstones - Bytown . . . It's My Town Canadian
The original version of "Egyptian Reggae" was a hit in the UK in late 1977. It was a version of Jamaican musician Earl Zero's song "None Shall Escape the Judgment"; Zero was credited as co-writer on Richman's later versions of the track.

Talking Heads - Little Creatures (1985)
"Roadrunner" was in some ways the signature piece of the Modern Lovers' repertoire, for both its great rock and J. Richman's unique voice.
