Tribute to Prince!
Wow... what can I say? This was such a difficult show to plan. So many songs.. so many memories tied to these songs growing up. My big brother was the one who really introduced me to Prince way back in the day. :-) Not only Prince but Morris Day, The Time (Jungle Love oh we oh we oh), Apollonia, Vanity 6... even Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
How do you categorize your favorite Prince songs.. there are so many. I started a list and would have to go back to it and rearrange because I forgot about one.. and this happened over and over again. So this show was hard to plan... not only for that reason but also because what an amazing individual he was, and how do you do someone like this justice in a mere 2 hours. Just impossible. I was joking with my brother that ya could do a years worth of shows with Prince music alone.. for real.
Anyway, in vintage fashion... I wanted to play some of his popular songs and some that were not as well known. For sure the true Prince legions would know alllll of these songs but I wanted to mix it up a bit.
Requests, in addition made this.. in my opinion a great time celebrating Princes' gift, that he decided many years ago to share with us.
Truly an inspiration Prince was and is. I firmly believe that we all should follow our passions and in so doing share the talent(s) we have with the world. If Prince decided not to follow his love of music look at all that we would have missed out on. It is inconceivable to think about that.. at least in my opinion.
Follow your dreams, exercise your passions and who knows where doing so will take you. Even if it takes you nowhere... isnt it worth giving it a go?!?!!
From Prince himself..."You better live now, before the grim reaper come knocking on your door"
"Lets go crazy, let's get nuts!"
In utmost thanks to this great Man and wishing and hoping that he is in.. A world of never ending happiness, where you can always see the sun, day or night
Thank you for tuning into After Hours this morning. As always.. even though this is a sad show; having to say goodbye... I hope you enjoyed these 2 hours in tribute and I hope you will tune in again.
To everyone, I wish you a good day, good evening and goodnight.
:-)

This next set of music celebrates songs that were written and recorded by Prince but became famous through the vocal stylings of others. Alicia Keys covers this next track which appears on her 2001 debut album, "Songs In A Minor". Followed immediately by the originator himself. |

In the midst of some tracks that you, I am sure can sing along with but may not be aware were written by Prince. This next track, sung by the legendary Chaka Khan, won Prince a Grammy back in 1985 for Best Rhythm and Blues song. This song actually was recorded for his self-titled album "Prince" in 1979. Chaka Khans version which includes harmonica credits to another legend, Mr. Stevie Wonder... took over the charts in 84.. thus the award in 1985. "I Feel For You" next on After Hours. |

Had to add some Reggae flavor to this tribute to Prince. This is Ali Campbell. I am sure you would recognize the voice as he is the lead singer for the UK award winning Reggae band, UB40. Another group whose story.. whose rise to fame from poverty is truly incredible. Another example as to why it pays to pick up what you do.. what you love and go with it. Anyway... enough about that. This is "Purple Rain" in a Reggae stylee for you here on CKCU 93.1FM |

A request from the Interactive Menu for a song Prince wrote but it was Sinead O'Connor who sang this song into the charts where it reached #1 status on the Billboard Charts and stayed there for 4 weeks. It achieved Platinum status by the RIAA in 1990. Here is Sinead O'Connor with part production credits going to Nellee Hooper (who you may recognize from Soul II Soul fame). As we continue with our tribute to Prince. Sinead.... |

One of my favorite Prince songs, the title track from the album "Purple Rain". This song is amazing. A request i saved for the end of the show as i thought this would be the most fitting way to say good night tonight. So, without further adieu.. and with the most respect. Thank you Prince for all that you have given.. in music and otherwise. You will be missed but continue to be celebrated until...
Thank you for tuning in you all... and goodnight. |
