Tangerine Dream Month I

This month I will be doing a four part series on Tangerine Dream, with an emphasis on recent releases. Each show will feature classic material, recently released archival material, live material, and music from the most recent period (The Quantum Years). Featuring prominently in this series is the "In Search of Hades" box set, 16 CDs + 2 Blu-Ray, released in May 2019.
We start with a track from the first TD album, recorded 50 years ago in October 1969.

Next is the 1974 album Phaedra, which helped launch the group to a higher level of fame on the Virgin label. Mysterious Semblance is the famous "Mellotron only" track. I'll be playing the recent remaster from the In Search of Hades box set.

Next up are two out-takes from Phaedra; although I've selected only 12 minutes of material due to time constraints, the box set features 2 full CDs of this material, totaling almost 100 minutes. Some pieces hint strongly at what ended up on the album, while others showcase the battle of man vs. machine in those primitive synthesizer days, relatively speaking.

I have played the encore from the Royal Albert Hall concert twice before on the show. As some of you will remember, this is the only TD material available featuring Michael Hoenig of Agitation Free replacing Peter Baumann. The previously available version of this concert was missing 20 minutes and was in mono. Now as part of the box set it is released in full and in stereo. The full Part 1 wouldn't be possible to play as it's 70 minutes long, so I'll play the last 15 minutes or so for you tonight.

The Quantum Years is the latest and perhaps final phase for Tangerine Dream. After the first EP (Mala Kunia), Edgar Froese passed away. The other musicians, Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss, and Himiko Yamane, have carried forward Edgar's vision with the blessing of his widow. They released three more EPs (Quantum Key, Light Flux, and Particles), four live albums (Sessions I-IV), and the full-length album Quantum Gate, in 2017 and 2018. While we can never know what might have been possible had Edgar lived, the efforts and skill of this new trio is praiseworthy in its own right.
