Part one in the annual Heavy Friends series that pays respects to the departed.
Pictured: Mike Ratledge (1943-2025), was described as “tall, super-intelligent, forceful, self-possessed, and altogether daunting”. The Soft Machine founder and keyboard player was the longest lasting original member (after Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper). Soft Machine made a name for themselves on the Canterbury and London underground circuit playing an eclectic jazzy take on psychedelic prog-rock. Ratledge was arguably the band’s most recognizable figure, rocking a thick mustache, flowing mane, and darkened glasses.
