Heavy Friends
Saturday October 18th, 2025 with Heavy Ben
In Memoriam - 2025 (Part 1)

Part one in the annual Heavy Friends series that pays respects to the departed. Pictured: Mike Ratledge (1943-2025), was described as “tall, super-intelligent, forceful, self-possessed, and altogether daunting”. The Soft Machine founder and keyboard player was the longest lasting original member (after Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Hugh Hopper). Soft Machine made a name for themselves on the Canterbury and London UK underground circuit playing an eclectic jazzy take on psychedelic prog-rock. Ratledge was arguably the band’s most recognizable figure, rocking a thick mustache, flowing mane, and darkened glasses. (to embiggen the show icon, right-click and choose "Open image in new tab")

Hey Chris, yup some real groovers to lead off the program. It's curious what I miss from the year prior. Don't know how Joni Haastrup's death was not better reported. I guess “Soul Brother Number One” from Nigeria was not news enough in the Western press.

Dance
Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention "Freak Out" 3LP set was the first album I ever bought. Frank once did an interview where he said, 'I figured it would sell if you gave 3 records for the price of 1 with a really freaky cover; and I was right." He certainly had me pegged!!!!!

Did you know Frank did an interview at Carleton and insisted that they do the interview in the bathroom? lol Heard that story afterhours at Bluesfest when I sat around with the "old Mothers" on Dweezil's Zappa Plays Zappa Tour after hours. Great stories over an hour chat.
