Pianist and band leader Sérgio Mendes has died, aged 83. Mendes helped to popularize bossa nova in North America in the 1960s by combining Latin melodies and rhythms with jazz, pop, and funk. Their biggest hit was "Mas Que Nada" and you need to watch this live version from 1969 to appreciate the impact of this band comprised of just piano, bass and percussion. I watch this performance once a month and it is pure joy. I was fortunate to see Mendes with Brasil 2003 perform at the Ottawa Jazz Festival.
