Early Kraftwerk

A recently unearthed live performance recorded in Ottawa (at Glebe Collegiate!) in 1975 and bands with links to the early 1970s incarnation of the pre-robots and computers Kraftwerk. At what time is it getting dark here? 9:30! 9:30? Oh, good morning.
45 years ago tonight, Kraftwerk played in a high school auditorium in Ottawa. Touring on their 1974 "Autobahn", this performance finds the band in mid-career just prior to their commercial breakthrough.

Organisation preceded Kraftwerk and included Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider. Their lone LP "Tone Float" was recorded by Conny Plank, released in 1970, and has not been officially re-issued. Originals go for thousands of dollars and luckily I scooped an (allegedly unofficial) vinyl copy while I could.

Also recorded by Conny Plank, Ibliss' lone LP "Supernova" includes former Organisation member Basil Hammoudi and early Kraftwerk drummer Andreas Homann.

NEU! drummer Klaus Dinger performed on the first Kraftwerk album, and guitarist Michael Rother was also an early member of Kraftwerk.

Pissoff included Kraftwerk founder Florian Schneider, avant-garde artist Joseph Beuys, and Eberhard Kranemann (aka. Fritz Müller or Mueller), who was an occasional contributor to NEU! One of the few records that exist from 1968 is "Live At Creamcheese" in Dusseldorf (Frank Zappa's favourite club in Germany). Thank you internet for making this possible.

Thanks Ben, Kraftwerk are one of my all time favorites and I recently saw that on YouTube and everyone was talking about it a few weeks ago on Social Media. I had no idea they played here in Ottawa. My brother and I saw them in the way 80's in Montreal and it was like no other show we had ever seen.

Hey Wally, yeah this is quite the archival find! Must have been amazing to see them in the 80s. I saw Kraftwerk more recently in Reykjavik and thoroughly enjoyed it - especially the 3D portion with a huge screen and a simulated autobahn.

Thanks for saying hi Jack! Yes I love the bells and at the beginning of Kling Klang and that there are touches of analog instruments. No computers back then!

Hey hey Ben, I don't know the band but sounds good so far, and the little one is enjoying it, she's dancing in her high chair

Salut Cyrielle, glad to introduce Kraftwerk to new generations. I find that some of these pieces have a lullaby quality, nice to hear the little one bopping along

Cool show, Ben! This is my first listen to this early Kraftwerk recording. Definitely a different feel from their later work. I love it.

Really enjoying this and You may have to do a part 2, to feature some of Karl Bartos and Wolfgang Flur's later projects and works.

Wally - yeah that's another idea, Kraftwerk offshoots from the later years. Karl Bartos' recent (2013) "Off The Record" album is noteworthy.

I quite liked Karl's album "Esperanto" as Elektric Music when he teamed up with Andy from OMD, a band that was heavily influenced by Kraftwerk.

Ben, amazing did not know they played Glebe. How cool is that!

Ben, what is the history of this recording? I'm wondering if it's a bootleg from the crowd or how it was recorded and how it turned up. Not sure if you said earlier in the show.

9:32 PM, June 6th, 2020
Ben Armstrong (host)
Colin, unsure but to me the sound quality is too good to be a crowd recording. The spectators are in the background. My guess (speculation only) is a cassette recording off the mixing board. You can hear tape hiss on the recording, and the tracks bleed in that you can hear ghosting of other parts of the show during some quiet passages. If anyone has read more about the audio source, do say!
