September 9, 1971: seeking improved living conditions, 1,000 inmates took control of Attica prison. 42 hostages were taken. It did not end well. Governor Rockefeller and President Nixon blamed the black prisoners, and after four days ordered a forceful retake of the prison. A bloodbath courtesy the NY state troopers and National Guard ensued. 33 unarmed inmates and 10 correctional officers were killed, all but one at the hands of the authorities.
