Happy 50th birthday Human be-in : Turn on, tune in, drop out!
Mainly organized by Michael Bowen, the Human be-in, was a gathering that took place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park polo fields, which is said to have drawn in between 20, 000 and 30, 000 people, and was the prelude to the Summer of love.
The one day event had as themes, personal empowerment, cultural and political decentralization, communal living, ecological awareness, and radical liberal political consciousness.
The day consisted of speeches made by the likes of Timothy Leary, Allan Ginsberg, Richard Alpert, and musical performances by The Grateful Dead, Jefferson airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Quicksilver Messenger Service.
The culturally significant made the Haight-Ashbury district of of San Francisco a symbol of American counterculture.
