Eno/Byrne! Grails! Lie Detectors & The Invisible Party (Chant Records)
Starting out with a loaner of a much-sought after LP, a new purchase of the latest Grails 2xLP, and finishing with some new munificences from Chant records in the art/jazz/improv vein!
To start, a shout-out of thanks to Karl Bienath for loaning me this rare Eno/Byrne collaboration from '81 |

Time now for a quick sampling from Potland, Oregon's, Grails and their latest (2017) full-length release - their first since 2011's 'Deep Politics'. Let's hope it's not a 6-year wait until their next! |
Chalice Hymnal Grails - Chalice Hymnal |

Hepsibah TBWNIAS - Quality Rolls (Split LP w/ Crab Boat) |
Simian Vampire Shooting Guns - Flavour Country |
Continuing on with two tracks from a new LP out on Cardinal Fuzz... but it's more of an 'archival' release, most of the songs being recorded about 10 years ago or so... but it features the work of Chris Laramee from Shooting Guns (see previous Set). After that we move towards a bit of prog in prep for the descent into jazz and chaotic Improv! |
Some Sort of Problem Parades Against Parades - Driving Me Stoned |
Heading Up to Head Down Parades Against Parades - Driving Me Stoned |
White Werewolf Weird Owl - Interstellar Skeletal |
Pendergast Ex Cubas - Memoires Incubessennes |
Now we take a left-turn into improv-jazz territory... |
Medley: Medley: Vertical Invader / Seventh Arrow / T.H. / Doctor Honoris Caus Weather Report - Live in Tokyo |
.. so that we might finish up with 2 new releases in the improv-side on the Chant Records Label! We start with The Lie Detectors, a duo of Eyal Maoz on guitar and Asaf Sirkis on drums, making uncanny, telepathic style of improv. Now based in New York, Maoz is a staple of the avant-garde scene with his bands Lemon Juice Quartet (with trumpeter Avishai Cohen) and Edom (featuring John Medeski and releasing albums on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records) and as a member of Shanir Blumenkranz’ Abraxas and John Zorn’s Cobra. Sirkis, now based in London, is one of the most active drummers on the European music scene, working with Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Jacob Collier, Dave Holland, Soft Machine and many others. The Lie Detectors is at once rooted in the rich tradition of jazz yet always willing to smash it wide open, bringing in other influences including rock, punk and whatever else might cross their Top Secret path. |

Shuman Kind is the debut record by The Invisible Party, an improvising trio - guitar, bass and drums create splatters of spontaneity, off-kilter phrases and distorted shrieks and scrapes, all done with merciless joy and abandon. Shuman Kind rewards repeated listening as new shapes and colors take form to reveal a truly one-of-a-kind musical universe. Guitarist Jon Lipscomb is based in Malmö, Sweden and has worked with Brandon Lopez, Jarrett Gilgore, Anders Lindsjö, Ole Mofjell, Jaimie Branch and others. Brooklyn-based bassist Kurt Kotheimer has worked with Bobby Previte, Chris Cohen (Deerhoof), Michael Coleman (Michael Rocketship), Ava Mendoza, Matt Nelson (Tune-Yards) and others. Also based in Brooklyn, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Treut has worked with Crystal Fighters, Kaki King, Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), Wild Yaks, Brandon Seabrook and others. |
