Night Watch

H de Heutz!! Fet.Nat.! Hemmingway! Moths and Locusts! TBWNIAS! Grails! Hampton Grease Band!
We start the first Nightwatch of 2018 with a bang - and features galore! I was tight for cash before Xmas, so my pent-up music-acquisition urges went unfulfilled until recently, when I was able to get a few of the releases that were nibbling at the edges of my consciousness (like a handful of new local releases), and a few chance-finds that made my year (already!).
Starting out with two tracks each from two new (ish) ottawa bands from each of their latest releases. These bands are definitely something to catch live! |
REL FVEY H de Heutz - The Natural World |
Non-Member H de Heutz - The Natural World |
Trust Cops Fet Nat - Gaoler |
Le Rictus de Geolier/Cible du Malfrat Fet Nat - Gaoler |
The next two tracks are from a new release from a Toronto band, a digital-collage project - surprisingly chill for the Nightwatch, but too well-done to ignore. Then we hit a few miscellaneous tracks (definitely NOT beat/chill! :) ), to get us on an even keel before the next few features. |
Ocean Hues Hemingway - Memoirs |
Memoirs Hemingway - Memoirs |
The Fall of Siagon This Heat - First |
Vitus Dance Virgil Moorefield - Transformations |
Spicy Spiders Space Invaders & Nik Turner - Plays the Sonic Space Opera |
Time to delve into some neo-psych, starting out with 2 tracks from a prolific Toronto band, and an LP of rarities/outakes from local meisters, The Band Whose Name is a Symbol (TBWNIAS hereafter). |
Acid Cloud (Part 1) Moths and Locusts - Intro/Outro |
Acid Cloud (Part 2) Moths and Locusts - Intro/Outro |
Eastern Teutonic Curfew TBWNIAS - Cosmic Curios |
Finishing the 'regular '(heh) part of the Nightwatch with a few tracks from an LP that was released in 2008 by Portland Oregon's Grails. 'Take Refuge in Clean Living' an LP that saw the crystallization their sound, IMHO. |
Stoned at the Taj Again Grails - Take Refuge in Clean Living |
Take Refuge Grails - Take Refuge in Clean Living |
Clean Living Grails - Take Refuge in Clean Living |
We finish with a full-2xLP feature on one of the 'chance finds' I referred to earlier - the Hampton Grease Band. This album is one of those LPs I had never heard of, despite the fact that it is many-storied. Very hard to find (and you can tell this one is well-played - there is a LOT of surface noise on it, hope it doesn't bother the sensitive listener....), it's been hailed as a jam-band classic, fronted by Col. Bruce Hampton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Hampton), who was active in the music scene in Atlanta GA., mentoring a lot of 'freak scene'and jam bands, eventually passing away on May 1st of last year. I find it a great accomplishment... and, since it's a hard one to find, I play it for you, in its 1.5-hour entirety. I generally don't like to do a final feature that is quite THAT long... but this is a special'' LP, and one that deserves a good accolade. |
