Patti Smith's 'Coral Sea'!; Jim Carroll Spoken Word! Jandek's 'Afternoon of Insensitivity'!
A special, ultra-self-indulgent Nightwatch - Only poetry/spoken Word tonight! My Xmas/New Years present to you! All the best to all, we'll meet again in 2018!
Starting this Nightwatch with a 2006 reading of a phenomenal and arresting paen and lament by Patti Smith (from her epic 1996 poem of the same title) and Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine guitarist, accompanying her in an improvisational manner on guitar.) to Smith's friend and former lover Robert Mapplethorpe, a groundbreaking (and equally arresting) artist and photographer from the '70's and '80's. |

Next up, someting a little more lighthearted (but dark in its' own way) - two pieces of spoken word from New York poet/musician Jim Carroll, recorded live at St. Marks Church in the Bowery in 1991. The 'Praying Mantis CD takes poems and monologues from his collections Living at the Movies (1973), The Book of Nods (1986), and Forced Entries (1987) and a 14-minute improvised monologue/prose poem/rant called "The Loss of American Innocence". |

We finish with the entire hour-and-a-half 'An Afternoon of Insensitivity' from 'Manhattan Tuesday', a live album by Jandek released in 2007 (incidentally, the 50th album released by Corwood Industries since 1978). It was recorded at the Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan on September 6, 2005. The Representative from Corwood plays Korg synthesizers (set to organ-like sounds) and sings; he is accompanied by noted improvisation electric guitar stylist Loren Connors, No-Neck Blues Band alumnus Matt Heyner (bass), and many-storied experimental drummer, Chris Corsano (playing with the likes of Sunburned Hand of the Man, Six Organs of Admittance, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Jim O'Rourke, to name but a few). As a recounting of an episode of depression, it is remarkable and resonates with experiences of my own very deeply. An artistic achievement. |
