On the eve of the 16th Community record show, it's time to play a few of the finds, like Christian Vander's post-Magna project 'Offering'... but there are other things as well, like the Amoeba Starfish's side-project 'Alfrun'.
Starting off, not with a Record show find, but a new effort from the Amoeba Starfish crew, a side-project 'Alfrun', celebrating a Nordic heritage! |
Fjolnir Alfrun - Fjolnir |
Fengur Alfrun - Fjolnir |
Voluspa (Words of the Seeress) Alfrun - Fjolnir |
Names of the Dwarves Alfrun - Fjolnir |
At the record show I did manage to find a great effort from Stateside psych guitarist Chris Forsyth, something a bit more challenging than the (albeit wonderful) Solar Motel Band - a solo album called 'Paranoid Cat'. After that, a few misc trax before the next record show find. |
Paranoid Cat Pt II Chris Forsyth - Paranoid Cat |
Anniversary Day Chris Forsyth - Paranoid Cat |
Battle Funk Nymph - New Millenium Prayer |
Little Red Record Company The Silence - Hark |
Another record-show find - a phenomenal live performance at the 2009 Roadburn Festival from LA's neo (OK, they've been around since the mid-90's...) space-rockers, Farflung. |
Endless Drifting Wreck FarFlung - Live @ Roadburn 2009 |
Silver Shrooms FarFlung - Live @ Roadburn 2009 |
The Day of St. Anthony's Fire FarFlung - Live @ Roadburn 2009 |
R-Complex FarFlung - Live @ Roadburn 2009 |
Out of the Record-show finds and into the Merrie Mack, a set of music for Mark Mackinnon. Last Merrie Mack was deep into the experimental side... this time there's some more song-oriented material (except for Yahowa13). |
Travelling Ohm Yahowa13 - Sonic Portation |
Distant Antenna Mono Puff - Unsupervised |
Exterminator Ari Up - Dread More Dan Dead |
The Sun Does Rise Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - Take Me To God |
I Heard Her Call My Name Velvet Underground - Live MCMXCIII |
Now into some Toubabou. It's some prime freak/Q-prog, but I've never owned either LP... but found them both at the Record show! We finish the set with something newer and not from the record show - Japanese 'jazz-fusion'/post-rock! |
Pylon Toubabou - Attente |
Doudou N'Diaye et ses Rosettes Toubabou - Le Ble et le Mil |
Raumkranheit Mouse on The Keys - Online |
Finally the 'big find' at the record show: The first 'Offering' LP from Christian Vander (drummer/main mind behind Magma), dedicated to John Coltrane, very often dismissed by Magma fans. The music is harder to categorise than it seems at first. It's certainly not Zeuhl. I have no other choice than to call it a jazz-fusion album, surely a very atypical one, as there are Zeuhl, contemporary classical and even pop influences. Second thing, although the album is dedicated to John Coltrane, I like "Offering" albums so much for the very same reasons I like Pharaoh Sanders' work - religious atmosphere, very repetitive nature of music which is, however, never boring and always compelling (like on "Joïa"), improvisational nature of Christian Vander's vocal. The album is thoroughly brilliant and I think it's a must for Magma/Zeuhl fans. Also, very much recommended for Pharoah Sanders fans and cautiously recommended as a jazz fusion album. |
Offering Pt 1 Offering - I-II |
Earth Offering - I-II |
