Starting off the show wih a large featture - 3 tracks from each of the latest two releases from California's 'Jack O' The Clock'. Also, later in the show, both tracks from a single from Zeuhl bad Eskaton, and then finishing with an entire CD-long suite from Zeuhl-master (and ex-Magma bassist), Janick Top. I did a feature on it when it came out in 2008, but I think it's time for a re-visit. Other good news: there's a new EP (on vinyl!) coming out from Simply Saucer called 'Baby Nova' on Hamilton's Schizophrenic label recorded at Detroit's Ghetto Studios. Apparently there's also 2 LP set called Saucerland of lo fi rarities coming out in the summer from Chicago's Logans Hardware label!
Just happenned across, and fell in love with California band Jack O' The Clock - not that they're 'influenced by any of these bands, but if you're open to any bands like The Residents, Henry Cow, Gentle Giant, Angels of Light or King Crimson, you should look into them. First, a few tracks from their 2011 LP, 'How Are We Doing and Who Will Tell Us' |
Blue Tail Fly Jack O' The Clock - How Are We Doing and Who Will Tell Us |
First of the Year Jack O' The Clock - How Are We Doing and Who Will Tell Us |
Last Of The Blue Bloods Jack O' The Clock - How Are We Doing and Who Will Tell Us |
Next, a track or three from their latest, Last year's 'All My Friends'. A Kudo from a potent source - Fred Frith says Damon Waitkus (guitar, hammered dulcimer, voice) is on of the 'most courageous composers' of our time... |
A Lot of People Are Dead Wrong Most Of The Time Jack O' The Clock - All My Friends |
Sunday Afternoon on the Median Jack O' The Clock - All My Friends |
Old Friend in a Hole Jack O' The Clock - All My Friends |
Now, a quick acoustic sidetrack, some avante, some cosmic, some doom... |
Black Orchid Sun City Girls - Funeral Mariachi |
Paix Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Paix |
The Man With The Silver Tongue Angels of Light - New Mother |
Now we get to some heavier material. With the Nomeansno tune, remember - The Hanson Bros. are at Mavericks this Wednesday Night!! Also good news on the simply Saucer Front: there's a new EP (on vinyl!) coming out from Simply Saucer called 'Baby Nova' on Hamilton's Schizophrenic label !! |
A Career in Real Estate Fred Frith - Gravity |
Ghosts Nomeansno - 0+2=1 |
Hard Wired Bailter Space - Thermos |
About Leaving Day 15.60.75 (The Numbers Band) - Jimmy Bell's Still In Town |
Exit Plexit Simply Saucer - Half Human, Half Live |
As luck would have it, I managed to hook into a 7" single from a great Zeuhl band called Eskaton... and, since you may never get to hear the tracks again, here it is, in it's entirety... |
Le chant de la Terre Eskaton - Musique post-atomique 7" |
IF Eskaton - Musique post-atomique 7" |
And, since we're hitting the zeuhl, it's time to play the entire album-long suite 'Infernal Machina', an offering from 2008 from ex-Magma bassist (and composer of the classic magma track 'De Futura'... and, yes, he recycles 'that' bassline...) Janick Top. In fact, it was featured on The Nightwatch when it came out... but that was before 'On Demand', so I thought I'd blast it at you again, in it's entirety. Enjoy!! |
Infernal Machina Janick Top - Infernal Machina |
Thought: Fans of Zappa might also like Jack O'The Clock.
