Night Watch
Sunday December 1st, 2013 with Dāv Fot
Nucleus! Jethro Tull! Ozric Tentacles!

The Big Feature tonight is a look at the new 'Thick as a Brick 2' offering from Ian Anderson. Yes, we like the obscurities a lot here... but sometimes we have to sample a 'known quantity' to stay informed, don't we?
An unusual start - the usual modus operandi for the Nightwatch is to start in rock/psych and weirdness and work towards the jazz vibe. Tonight we mix it up, start in jazz, and move inexorably to the rock.

Eating up more time than I expected, I have trimmed some of the fat on the next set - left the two Canadian bands, in hopes of getting TAAB started by Midnight...

Na Cabarfeidh - Stick It In Your Ear Canadian
Now onto the main feature - Ian Anderson's 'Thick as a Brick 2' in it's entirety. The original plan was to play the the original TAAB (for context) and then play TAAB 2... but there are things that even The Nightwatch doesn't have time for. Next week, promise...
Thick as a Brick 2
Ian Anderson - Thick as a Brick 2
So, does it measure up? Of course not - the Original TAAB was a Jethro Tull LP. This can't really compare... but, to quote a statement made on 'RateYourMusic.com': 'if we look at this album as a release in 2012 and forget its regrettable ties to a masterpiece by Jethro Tull, then it is...the best solo album Ian Anderson has ever made." Sounds about right...

Now we finally hit the rock, in the form of the next feature - I have namaged o get a re-issue of Ozric Tentacles' 1990 release, Pungent Effulgent', jam/space/psych masterpeice!

And now time to get heavier with a local project The Sun Through A Telescope (http://tstat.bandcamp.com/ - "One man drone/doom recording project from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Dealing primarily in cassette releases. Cassettes available via Dwyer Records."). They also feature a 20+-minute piece... and this is the Nightwatch, could I resist?
