CKCU and Swing Is In The Air are honouring the memory of this show's founder and long-time host with re-broadcasts of 8 of Jacques' programs. These special shows will air every 3rd Sunday starting today, June 19. Today's program originally aired in November 2012, and featured Jacques presenting music from the Dreyfus Jazz label.
Swing Is In The Air was a 90-minute program in 2012; the additional half-hour on today's show features tracks from the 1957 collaboration between the great New Orleans born Paris resident Sidney Bechet and the French-Algerian pianist Martial Solal.

| To round out the program today, some music that I suspect Jacques would have enjoyed, not that his taste was at all limited to older styles of jazz, as his programming at the Ottawa International Jazz festival showed. Sidney Bechet (b. 1897) first went to France in the 1920's; he settled there permanently in 1951. He turned 60 during the making of the lp with Martial Solal. Solal (b. 1927) was the son of Algerian Jews, and was expelled from school in 1942 by the Vichy government that controlled Algeria. He settled in France in 1950, and was half the age of Bechet when they recorded together. |
