George Gershwin, 1898-1937, was one of the most successful American composers of the 20th century despite his life being cut short by a brain tumor in 1937. His songs have always been very popular with jazz musicians, with the harmony of 'I Got Rhythm' in particular being used as the basis of many other compositions.

The chord progressions used in 'I Got Rhythm' are both simple and flexible, meaning that both less- and more-experienced musicians can use them, either in composing or improvising. A musician's explanation: "For a musician, one of the great things about the Gershwin songbook is it's incredible flexibility. Summertime, Fascinating Rhythm, A Foggy Day, Love Walked In . . . They can be played straight or warped harmonically and/or rhythmically to a musician's heart's content. That doesn't apply as much to composers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and the like. Ellington comes close, but even his stuff isn't as amenable to being re-interpreted." |
