Alnoor Allidina presents a host of 2012 acquisitions, including Chicha Libre, The (Vieux Farka) Tourée-Raichel Collective, David Krakauer, Spanglish Fly, Rocket Juice & The Moon (Tony Allen + Flea + Damon Albarn), and on and on. In summary: a wonderfully eclectic afternoon of Earthling music!
We begin the program with a postlude to our Second Annual Awards Show Show, where we surveyed the nominees in the world music categories of various awards. No real surprises in the North American wards: Tinariwen picked up the Grammy, and Kiran Ahluwalia got the Juno. In France, Tinariwen was bested by Jehro, who won the Victoire de la Musique for world music ablum of the year. |

Let's begin with the "heavy" soul sounds of German-Nigerian Nneka. Maybe you caught her performance in Lorient, France yesterday? No? Nor did we -- here's a taste of her latest album. |

Two New York-based bands up next. Chicha Libre is heavily influenced by surf and Peruvian pop. Spanglish Fly is focused on reviving and spreading the message of boogaloo. The message apparently is: "dance!"
Both bands are quite active currently; Chicha Libre just finished up a South American tour, and Spanglish fly plays regularly in and around NYC. http://chichalibre.com http://spanglishfly.com/ |

From the "if you can imagine it, it exists" file. Remember when you imagined how great it would be if Tony Allen recorded an album with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorrilaz)? Well, it happened, and just like in your imagination, they called themselves Rocket Juice & The Moon. |
