Hommage to the late great Foday Musa Suso, fantastic new album from Salin, Ottawa International Jazz Fest artists, and many other groovy and weird new musical delights

Rest in Power Foday Musa Sosa, who passed away on May 25, 2025. Foday was a multi-instrumentalist, composer and vocalist, whose primary instrument was the kora. He was a true musical explorer, recording and performing with Herbie Hancock, Don Cherry, Hamid Drake, Adam Rudolph, Bill Laswell, Philip Glass, Pharoah Sanders, Jack DeJohnette, Ginger Baker, Paul Simon, Yousif Sheronick, Kronos Quartet, and many other, as well as releasing many other albums as a bandleader (Mandingo Griot Society and Mandingo) or as a solo artist. There is sadly very little available in terms of an obituary, especially in light of the wonderful music he left us with. Today we feature a small sampling of musical treats from this amazing musician. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foday_Musa_Suso Ottawa International Jazz Festival https://ottawajazzfestival.com/ https://program.ottawajazzfestival.com/item/14078-La-Pambele https://program.ottawajazzfestival.com/item/14076-Kombilesa-Mi https://program.ottawajazzfestival.com/item/13894-Balkan-Paradise-Orchestra Two other artists that we have featured on past shows are also performing at this wonderful festival but the respective shows are sold out: Richard Bona, and Arooj Aftab. :-(

I will celebrate the life and music of Foday Musa Suso, as I plant new life in the garden this afternoon listening to his music. Trust the Island Earth Collective to honour the greats. Far too many have passed this year. RIP. You will all live on in your musical gifts to us.

N&DTDL, so true with the many losses. Make me wonder how many lesser known artists or 'unknown' artists are killed in Gaza, Yemen, etc. May the music help with with a productive garden.

THANKS for the focus on Foday Musa Suso! ... what Drake said ... Easy guess there would be on TIE. Me, i am watching the jungle takeover of our back. And thinking, occasionally, we used to have a herb garden "gotta get to that". At least the bees and other friends are very happy. ;^)

Thanks Manmohan, as always, for your guidance to great artists and the tip on the Saturday Jazzfest party with 2 Colombian groups. Can'[t miss that big sound extravaganza. And hi there, Peter B.; jungles are good too, not every yard needs to ge a garden, bud.
