DUCK ROCK!!! A big solid holy wow man. Also try out his takes on operas Carmen, Madame Butterfly -- 'Fans'. Totally ground-breaker. Not to mention Sex Pistols, Adam and The Ants, Supreme Team, so many more. (Oh crap i mentioned them ;^)

Duck Rock is doing it for me! So infectious.

Glad to hear the Duck Rock love, peebee and Manmohan. It was a foundational album in my world, for sure. The 40th anniversary edition is only on vinyl so far, but I might have to pick it up anyway.

Also, among the many other things he was way ahead of the curve on the record was Keith Haring. Haring did artwork for it, and although he's now as ubiquitous as Warhol and Basquiat, he hadn't yet hit the mainstream.

I saw Mahlahtini and the Mahotella Queens in Vancouver, end of the 80s. Best show i have ever seen...

Duck Rock does seem ahead of the game...

I have an original pressing of Duck Rock on wax. It sounds so good. I actually didn't know the art work was done by Waring. That makes the album even more cool. .

Totally ahead of the game, rp in g! It's a little hard to understand, 40 years later, how amazingly fresh these sounds were. He was wrong about the square dancing making a comeback though!

...and I'm jealous: I've not seen M & MQs live. I bet it was a banger!

You and me both, Manmohan! 'Cept I got rid of mine in the great vinyl purge many years ago, sadly. Another art side note: for the 40th reissue, the original artwork had been lost, so the original graphic designer had to painstakingly reconstruct it. Also: liner notes by McLaren for what would have been a 25th anniversary edition that got scrapped.

A little further background reading for those who'd like it!

Mahlahtini and the Mahotella Queens. In deed. Saw that combo at Museum of Civilization -- dude's throat turned into a didgeridoo or something, and the Queens sure had the vocal + African gyration bum moves going on. They are still on regular rotation here.

yeah, pb, Mahlathini has that incredible oddball resonance. Amazing group!

For sure, and The Mahotella Queens sure have that big-bone gals sound. Not to mention gyration. (D'OH forgot to not mention...)

What'd the Talking Heads sing? The world moves on a woman's hips.

Yep, you played the one that's on now, among others. Really unlike anything else I've heard. Unclassifiable, just how we like it!
