| We begin with a full play of a truly important, and also very beautiful, emotional, deeply saddining and alarming piece. We will play 'Going Home Star: Truth And Reconciliation' in full. But first, a wonderfully well told Greenlandic Inuit creation story.
The brief synopsis version: 'Going Home Star' is a comissioned work for the Winnepeg Ballet, composed by Christos Hatzis. Protagonist Annie, is a young, urban First Nations woman who works in a hair salon, and enjoys the party life. Until she meets the other protagonist, Gordon, inhabited by a trickster spirit, and heavily burdened by the load of the residential school system, and all the brutality involved. Gordon, in the ballet, is literally strapped with the load of an effigy of a residential school on his back. The tale winds through the cruelty, torture, disrespect, and arrogance -- but finally resolves in Act 2 with "Building My Fire Up" and the burning of the school.
