Greetings, earthlings. In the usual pandemic style, today's show was previously recorded, but I'll be on hand today here in the interactive thing, should you have questions, comments or complaints.

Heart of Glass is an old fave of mine. Might have been the first bit of the new wave to crack into my consciousness back in 1979, and I've had a soft spot for it ever since.

The whole Maalem Mahmoud Guinia / James Holden / Floating Points "Marhaba" is dyno! Sooo beatsy, and unusual mix of cultures and styles. On Bandcamp at least it is listed under James Holden (keyboard/synth/electronics genius, producer, and creator collabs from all over). Um should be credited in playlist for sure.

Eh. I credited based on the way they prepared the release for Apple Music, but I did see the James Holden reference on Bandcamp. Here's to you, James Holden!

But yeah, it's a dynamite EP. My big question is whether the Maalem Mahmoud Guinia credited here is the same fellow as the Maleem Mahmoud Ghania on the Pharoah Sanders Trance Of Seven Colors record.

Hello Rob (and PeeBee), Clarice and I are cleaning house this afternoon. Well, I’m cleaning and Clarice is sitting contentedly on her cat bed, enjoying the scents wafting in from the open windows. Cats love spring! For an interesting take on the music of Pharaoh Sanders, check out last Tuesday’s episode of Bedtime Stories. The host, Chris Lyne did a feature on the Rhodes Piano, and Astral Traveling was played.

oh no, not peebee again
HEADPHONES FIRMLY CLAMPED ON! These collabs are truly wonderful. And full of detail.

Oooh, thanks for the tip, Shelly Ann! I'm a fan of the instrument and I love that track! Greetings to Clarice!

PB: the recording on the Pharoah/Maleem Mahmoud Ghania record is especially tasty. Some Bill Laswell magic at work in there.

Errata: I just made a mistake there: Crush by Floating Points was not an EP and did not come out in 2020. It's a full-length LP from 1919.

Yes, there were songs by Patrice Rushen, Molly Johnson, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Morcheeba, Gil Scott Heron—very funky and well worth listening to. I can’t find cat-sized headphones!

I just went and looked at the playlist. Looks like a terrific episode. I've not listened to Bedtime Stories before, but I'll check it out on demand.

YUP! Anything produced by Bill Laswell sounds *absolutely fantastic*! The production here on 'Promises' is also, for sure. i had no idea about Floating Points, or James Holden either, until very recently. Clearly my bad... Definitely HEADPHONES ON material, all. Full of subtle details.

Heh. Let's see if you still love it when my English Meadow comes back in to fool the silence detector. You may not approve.

ok, it is really PeterB, i admit it
i, for one, am loving the Meadow underlay. Very appropriate to the sounds. i will steal your idea!

And so far, it's working to defeat the evil silence smasher, so there's that!

Clarice liked the birds. This music is absolutely GORGEOUS

Shelly Ann, I meant to warn Clarice that the birds were coming, but I forgot. Promises is indeed gorgeous, and I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Aaaaaaagh! Silence detector just bit me. Not enough meadow in that part, I guess. Sorry folks!

Yeah, it was very harsh for last week to cut the all-import silences and boost hell outa the quiet bits too. Evil Silence Detector defeat vs Subtlety Removal. Not to mention a TON of work to do it. OH-OH! Just a brief interruption ;^/

The battle against the silence detector will continue...

There's a John Cage piece you should try to play.
