A time trip back to the 20th century.

An all-20th Century special edition. First, a dive into the delightful, brand-new compilation Excavated Shellac: An Alternate History of the World's Music, in which another angle on the century is exposed through its 78 rpm records from around the globe. Then a celebration of the 40th anniversary of two hugely influential worldy albums from early 1981: Sandanista by the Clash and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by Brian Eno and David Byrne.

Nice to have you here. This album is a treat. My pronuciation of the artists and songs? Not so much.

David Dalle (host)
Your pronunciation of artists and songs make me feel so much better about my pronunciation of artists and songs, so I am grateful for that. :P

Probably this whole show would have been improved if I had just shut up and played the records.

Shelley and Clarice
Hi Rob, I don’t even want to think of how these names would sound if I would be using my screen reader! Atrocious. I can’t believe those important albums you mentioned at the beginning of the show are 40 years old. I remember hearing them on CKCU. Time flies.

Hey Shelly Ann! And meow, Clarice! I know, I know; great albums, but it kinda dates me to have heard 'em the first time around. But you know, I got to thinking; what if, back in 1981, I heard some old poop on the radio talking up and playing some seminal stuff from 40 years earlier, 1941? And then I realized it would be Duke Ellington and Glen Miller and Billie Holiday's God Bless the Child and all manner of truly amazing stuff...

...so music is timeless, is I guess what I'm saying here!

Shelley Ann Morris
that’s a catchy tune playing right now. I can’t understand a word of it, but it does sound incredibly joyful! (Smile).

Sinatra! Fats Waller! Cab Calloway! Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys! Hell, some of the 78s we're listening to right now came from around then.

That one was Osibonibom. Ghana!

Shelley Ann “old poop ‘n’ proud of it” Morris
Actually, old poop music is good! My late father and his friends introduced me to the jazz that I love today—I grew up on it—it was our ‘thing’ and we listened to it a lot. Music is timeless The Duke, Ella, Billie, The Count, Louis, Sarah.....all his favourites...and more.

Yes, the osibonbon song (sp?). So upbeat!

Yeah Shelly! Hoist that old poop flag!

Shelley Ann Morris
My screen reader wouldn’t have picked up on the mis-spelling of Glenn Miller’s name, but my Dad would (smile). Dad would make me green with envy telling me about all the ‘greats’ that he saw live. Old Poops Rule!!! And so does the Mighty 93.

I think your dad would have dug the Martinique combo that's playing right now!
