"Three Letters from Sarajevo", Goran Bregovic's recent album with his Wedding and Funeral Orchestra and favourites from all over the world.
Welcome to my guest hosting of This Island Earth today, we will hear many of my favourites from all over the world, but we will begin with a complete airing of Goran Bregovic's recent release.
Early In 1991 Goran Bregovic was filmed on a rooftop in his hometown Sarajevo speaking of his tremendous admiration for the mix of cultures and religions in Sarajevo and expressed musically with overlapping Muslim call to prayer and Catholic and Orthodox bells. He says “It would be a shame, if it has to stop one day”. This was just a few months before the war which and the siege of Sarajevo--the longest siege in modern history--which would destroy this coexistence.

Goran Bregovic returns to this time with his new album "Three Letters From Sarajevo". It is a centered around three pieces (the "Letters") for violin with three different violinists, Serbian Mirjana Neskovic, Tunisian Zied Zouari and Israeli Gershon Leizerson. The three "Letters" are surrounded by songs with several different guests singers, including some of the last recordings by the late Rachid Taha, Israeli singers Asaf Avidan and Riff Cohen, Spanish singer Bebe. They are joined by Goran Bregovic's "The Wedding and Funeral Orchestra" giving it a wonderful gypsy-brass with Arabic, Jewish, Spanish flavours and a punk punch. The album is almost cinematic, not surprising considering Goran Bregovic's previous soundtrack masterpieces like "Time of the Gypsies" and "Underground", and therefore really deserves a full listen.
Make sure to listen to my program Thursday afternoon's 2-4pm! 25 years on-air with 4 years of programming available on-demand!

Starting off in Iran with this next set with a couple of examples of Iranian tribal minorities from Southwestern Iran with folk music from the Lurs of Lorestan and a subgroup of the Lurs, the Bakhtiari. In particular I adore the singer Malek Masoudi, in this music he starts off with beautiful singing in a lower register and in the last third of the song there is an unexpected jump in register and passionate intensity which just grabs you by the heart. It is followed suitably by the piercing double-reeded Sorna and there is great percussion and rhythm throughout. |

This next set starts off with an extremely rare type of Gamelan from Western Bali, the Gamelan Jegog which uniquely features all-bamboo instruments. Then we move to one of the most unique and spectacular albums from 2018, "Small Island Big Song", which features many indigenous artists recorded all over the Pacific Ocean, from as far west as Madagascar to as far East as Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Most of these indigenous music traditions I heard for the first time. On top of that, the album actually represents, with the musician's guidance, the mixing many of the songs together into multiple layers by Australian producer Tim Cole. The result is spellbinding, magnificent and utterly unique! |

Thanks very much for the 'Three Letters' David! Both fun multi-cultural party sounding, and also horrific at the same time, given the history. Believe you also played in full on your program a while back too? (Listening in from Toronto.)
