This Island Earth
Sunday September 30th, 2018 with PeterB
Lots of Indigenous powered musics today. Including a full play of Jeremy Dutcher's Polaris Prize winner, traditional Laos. And lots more. Mostly newer.

Today's This Island Earth adventure takes us through Indigenous head-spaces, from Canada to around the world. Including a full play of Jeremy Dutcher's very deserved 2018 Polaris prize winner, the STUNNING "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa". Plus loads of sounds from other parts of the planet too. From classical to experimental to progressive. Almost all new works, or at least new-ish. Please DO hit us up on the Interactive Thingy (over there ==>). We'd love to hear from you!!

Starting off with an ear-freshener. And a wake up call! The live performance of Christos Hatzis' "Going Home Star" a few years back at NAC was EXTREMELY MOVING! We shall have to play this in full again some day soon…

Jeremy Dutcher took home the 2018 Polaris prize, for his STUNNING "Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa" creation. It is wrapped around wax cylinder field recordings of the Wolastoqiyik people singing their traditional songs, dug up from the Canadian Museum of History's collection, circa early 1900s. The pieces are in the nearly killed-off Wolastoqiyik language, melded with contemporary classical and experimental music. JUST WOW!

Dutcher is a classically trained vocalist, pianist, and composer, as well as archeologist and musicologist. Hailing from the Tobique First Nation in what we now call New Brunswick.

This is an important piece of work, on so many levels. So we will play the whole darned thing today. Get on your best headphones, and listen for the original wax field recordings so wonderfully integrated into the pieces. The real deal. Almost erased, but so thankfully starting to look like some signs of return. "Indigenous Renaissance" ... indeed!!

We also encourage all to go watch the acceptance speech here. It is quite inspiring!!

More older traditional tunes, based on field recordings, this time from Laos, and the musical practices of the ethnic minorities living there. Another pair of interesting new releases, full of unusual (to our ears) sounds. A waist-deep dive we shall surely visit again.

Yet another terrific new release. Yet another waist-deep dive. Really dig the concept of nation-less-ness here. And the wonderful fusions, collaborations, and positive changes that abound when we can encourage that to happen.
