Mind-blowing brand new release from Australian Indigenous artist Gurrumul + plenty of other gems
Welcome to THIS ISLAND EARTH, CKCU's ''world music'' program, broadcast every Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. EST. Stay with us this afternoon (Sunday 1-4pm) at CKCU 93.1 FM in the greater Ottawa area or at ckcufm.com from anywhere around the world. This afternoon we feature the brand new album from the late Australian Indigenous guitarist/vocalist, Gurrumul. On the new album, completed just before his passing last year he teamed collaborated with a number of musicians from the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony. The result is a stunning and sublime album that fuses traditional sounds sung in the Yolunga language, with Western classical and Steve Reich-like minimalism. Expect also to hear from several other great new releases and some older ones as well. Keep it locked here at CKCU.

Fascinating release from a stellar group of improvising musical explorers - German trumpetist Manfred Schoof, Swiss pianist extraordinaire Irène Schweizer, the inconoclastic French saxophonist Barney Wilen and the wonderful South Asian musicians of the Dewan Motihar Trio. If free jazz is not your cup of tea this piece is challenging at times but stick with it as it is really well worth a careful listen. |
