Welcome to THIS ISLAND EARTH, CKCU's world music program, broadcast every Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. EST. Stay with us this afternoon (Sunday 1-4pm) at CKCU 93.1 FM in the greater Ottawa area or at ckcufm.com from anywhere around the world. This afternoon we begin with a hommage to the incredible life of the late anti-Apartheid activist and revolutionary, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who passed away on April 2. Thousands gathered at her funeral yesterday (April 14) in South Africa to celebrate her life and to send her off (http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-43767488). Yesterday also marked another occasion, albeit of lesser significance - that would be my 50th birthday. The old man here will also feature some indulgences by playing a number of fave tracks from over the years as well as some new gems that have been recently released. Expect to hear some music from Haiti, South Africa, Mali, Senegal, Cyprus, Pakistan, Lebanon, Niger, Algeria, Brazil, as well as some fusiony pieces which defy geographical origin. Yes, the only Qawwali track I have played today is the Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali & Temple of Doom one. AA mix of qawwali and electronica.
