In the next set, we feature some gritty and groovy rock, starting with Lobi Traore, a fantastic guitarist from Mali who passed away in 2010. We then hear from two stunning Ghanaian outfits: septuagenarian Ebo Taylor and his band of Afrobeaters, and The Psychedelic Aliens, lovingly re-released by Voodoo Funk.

Like Ethiopiques, the Zanzibara series focuses on a specific region of the globe in great details. This time it is Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, as well as its close surroundings. Volume 1 features taarab music (sung in Swahili but with Arabic and Indian influences) and pays tribute to the longest running club in Zanzibar -- The Ikhwani Safaa Musical Club.

In the final hour, we present a battle of the horns, featuring two great musical cities: London and New York. Dial in at 520-2528 or email earthckcu@gmail.com with your vote!

In our first match-up, we hear Red Baraat vs. Saravah Soul. Red Baraat is a New York-based "dhol and brass" band, and started out as an Indian wedding band. Featuring three percussionists (including leader Sunny Jain on the Indian dhol drum) and many horns, this band plays the music of Northern Indian.

Saravah Soul is based in London and Brazil. They mix Afro-Brazilian rhythms with funk and soul music and were formed in 2005 by Otto Nascarella.

Our second match-up pits Slavic Soul Party against the Heliocentrics, a true battle for the ages. Led by percussionist and composer Matt Moran, Slavic Soul Party play high-energy music from the Balkans. "Fiery Balkan brass, throbbing funk grooves, killer Gypsy accordion, and virtuoso jazz chops make Slavic Soul Party! NYC's official #1 brass band for Balkan Soul Gypsy Funk."

The Heliocentrics, led by Malcolm Catto, have some of the biggest ears in music today. Alongside their own solo recordings, they have worked with the likes of Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke and Iranian music virtuosos Lloyd Miller. Talk about padding your resume.

Our final match-up pairs two Afrobeat bands. Antibalas is renowned the world over for their take on Fela Kuti's music. In fact, they currently play the music for the hit Broadway show, Fela.

Yaaba Funk hair from North London and play a mix of "afrobeat, hi-life, broken beat, and funk.

Yaaba Funk may be feeling some pressure here as the oddsmakers pick Antibalas as the clear favourite in this afrobattle.
