Thank you + Music to Mark the International Day to End Violence Against Women + Some Outstanding New Releases

Welcome to another addition of THIS ISLAND EARTH, CKCU's weekly program (Sunday 1-4 pm) dedicated to great music from all over the globe. Yesterday was the International Day to End Violence Against Women. To support that day we will feature a number of recordings performed by women, either that directly address the issue or that support more generally women's rights. We also feature a number of outstanding new releases that caught my ear, and then we may have time for a few other odds and ends. Enjoy and please drop a line. Thanks to everyone who DIALED and DONATED or PLEDGED ON-LINE during this year's FUNDING DRIVE. We reached our goal of raising $135 000 thanks to you. Now for another year of great programming at CKCU.

That's really interesting--I heard Likufanele from Zero 7"s Simple Things CD--one of my "Desert Island" CDs--I guess that IS a big, celebratory African choir--which is what the song always sounded like to me.

Wicked Afrobeats! ... The perfect antidote for shmarmy Christmas time crapola we are now getting subjected to in big-box grocery stores and the like (from which I just escaped).
