Yom and the Silence of Exodus; favourites from Eastern Europe, West and North Africa and more
As guest host on today's This Island Earth, I will be showcasing some of my favourites from Mali, Morocco, Hungary, the Balkans and more. The centerpiece of today's show will be French Jazz/Klezmer clarinetist Yom and "The Silence of the Exodus". Yom composed this instrumental quartet to commune with the founding myth of the Jewish people. Originally commissioned for a stage at the Isle de France festival in Paris; it was written for the unusual combination of clarinet, cello, doublebass, and Iranian percussion (zarb, daf, bendir) and performed by Yom, Farid D, Claude Tchamitchian, Bijan Chemirani respectively. It is a work of searing Biblical intensity and haunting beauty. Magnificent!

| Before I heard the following album, I would have said a single-reeded instrument like the clarinet could not match the searing intensity and power of a double-reeded instrument like the Moroccan Ghaita which finished the first set with Said Berrarda. The Silence of the Exodus banished that thought. |
