Yom and the Silence of Exodus; favourites from Eastern Europe, West and North Africa and more

As guest host on today's This Island Earth, I will be showcasing some of my favourites from Mali, Morocco, Hungary, the Balkans and more. The centerpiece of today's show will be French Jazz/Klezmer clarinetist Yom and "The Silence of the Exodus". Yom composed this instrumental quartet to commune with the founding myth of the Jewish people. Originally commissioned for a stage at the Isle de France festival in Paris; it was written for the unusual combination of clarinet, cello, doublebass, and Iranian percussion (zarb, daf, bendir) and performed by Yom, Farid D, Claude Tchamitchian, Bijan Chemirani respectively. It is a work of searing Biblical intensity and haunting beauty. Magnificent! Please make sure to tune-in on my regular program Thursday afternoons 2-4pm! And of course there are 2 years of programs with music from all over the world available on-demand anytime! http://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/105/index.html?filter=all
The contrast between the astonishing beauty and restrained fury in the first song always knocks me out. Coming from an area soaked in wonderful and passionate singers and music, this song stands out.

Before I heard the following album, I would have said a single-reeded instrument like the clarinet could not match the searing intensity and power of a double-reeded instrument like the Moroccan Ghaita which finished the first set with Said Berrarda. The Silence of the Exodus banished that thought.

Thank you David, for re-playing Yom / Le Silence de l'Exode. I remember well hearing it on your regular show a while back. It is indeed just beautiful, and so passionate!

Make sure to tune in this Thursday for a special show with guest record producer and rare record collector Christopher King will be joining me to discuss one of his favourite finds: Alexis Zoumbas, a Greek violinist who made recordings in New York City during the 1920's. He has lovingly restored and released an album of Zoumbas' beautiful and haunting folk music from Epirus in Northwestern Greece. We will also hear other music from Greece, Turkey, Armenia and more.
