In the final hour, we listen to recordings from the New York-based Fania record label. Formed in 1964 by Dominican-born composer and bandleader Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964, the label went on to release some of the most influential salsa albums of the sixties and seventies.
In the words of allmusic.com: "Fania is, bar none, the greatest Latin recording label of all time, the home of the most sparkling salsa and the boogiest boogaloo ever set down on a mold of wax barely able to resist melting from the heat." The label's most celebrated artists included: Celia Cruz, Larry Harlow, Ray Barretto, Ralfi Pagan, Luis "Perico" Ortiz, Bobby Valentín, Rubén Blades, Héctor Lavoe. To give us a sense of how big this label was, we will start the hour with a few cuts from the label's signature band, the Fania All-Stars. Over the course of a few years, they went from playing small clubs in Greenwich Village (~1968) to playing Yankee Stadium (1973)! Fania's website is: http://www.fania.com/ |
