The Ottawa Welsh Society is very proud to announce that a Welsh Film Festival will be held at the ByTowne Cinema in Ottawa during March. We believe that this might be the first ever Welsh Film Festival in Canada! It all started over a year ago when a small group of likeminded movie buffs in the Society got together and decided it was high time that some of the excellent films coming out of Wales were shown in Ottawa. After many months of reviewing countless films and then negotiating with the film producers in Wales, we have succeeded in lining up a really excellent programme of four films which showcase Welsh film-making creativity and reflect the language, culture and history of Wales. Three of them are in the Welsh language, with subtitles (Welsh is a living language spoken by about 20% of the population). There is something there for everyone: the portrayal of poet Hedd Wyn in his native Snowdonia and on the battle fields of World War One; the grim reality of the coal miners’ strike in 1985/6 as seen in Y Streic a Fi; the heart-warming Y Syrcas, about a travelling Victorian circus troupe and the effects they have on the local community of Tregaron; and an electrifying new approach to Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood. A film will be shown each Tuesday evening during the month of March- March 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th(6.45 p.m.). I have checked You tube and there are clips of each movie there (look up with the Welsh names). For any further information please contact alisonlawson@rogers.com or phone 613-725-2704.
