An Indian Morning, celebrating and seeking the spirit of India thru sounds, stories, music & songs.

Namaste! If there is music in the air, and the mantra and the sound of the birds, a message in the first rays of the sun, it must be an Indian morning. We all know and have seen the above classic dance song is from Dev Anand's classic film Guide (1965). But how many of us know, that the above song was originally recorded and picturised for Bimal Roy's classic film Devdas (1955). Devdas (1955) was directed by Bimal Roy. Music by S.D. Burman. Lyrics by Shailendra. The film starred Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen and others. Dada Burman had composed and recorded this song Piya Tose Naina Lage Re for the film Devdas (1955). The song was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and was picturised on Suchitra Sen and Dilip Kumar. Dada Burman loved this song very much, composed by him. But just before the release of Devdas (1955), director Bimal Roy decided to delete this song from the film. Dada Burman was very upset for the omission of his classic creation. But he had to keep quiet. Years later, S.D. Burman was composing music for Guide (1965). There was a requirement for a dance song in the film to show Waheeda Rehman's success as a dancer. Dada Burman offered the old classic tune to producer Dev Anand and director Vijay Anand. Both of them loved the song. In Devdas (1955) the song was of less than 3 minutes duration. But in Guide (1965) the requirement was for a 8 minute 30 second long dance song. Dada Burman and Shailendra reworked on the song, and a 8.30 minute long composition, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, was recorded. It was picturised on Waheeda Rehman, showing her dancing at different venues, and her success as a dancer. This dance song became immensely popular, after the release of Guide (1965). Dada Burman was very happy and satisfied his classic creation, which he had composed for Devdas (1955), finally reached the public in Dev Anand's classic film Guide (1965). Let us watch/listen both the versions of the classic song, first the song, omitted from Devdas (1955). Then the final version, which was included in Guide (1965). 02-PIYA TOSE NAINA LAGE RE CD MISC-20220626 TRACK#02 3:21 DEVDAS-1955; LATA MANGESHKAR; S. D. While assisting director Hemen Gupta on the film Kabuliwala (1961), based on Tagore’s story, Gulzar wrote the lyrics of Ganga Aaye Kahan Se, which was set to the tune of an East Bengal bhatyali (boatman) folk composition by Salil Chowdhury. Gulzar’s obsession with all things Bengali began to take shape, from the use of melodies to films inspired by Bengali writers and filmmakers. His marriage to the actress Rakhee, whom he humorously referred to as his “bangalan” wife, turned the Sikh writer into a “half Bengali”, he said. The non-film album Gulzar in Conversation with Tagore features seven songs based on Hindi translations of poems by Tagore. The indefatigable 84-year-old poet and filmmaker has written the lyrics for compositions by Shantanu Moitra and all rendered by the singer Shreya Ghoshal & Shaan. In Singaar Ko Rehne Do, the excellent use of a shehnai and a stringed instrument on Ghoshal’s ethereal vocals reflects the semi-classical influence. Gulzar Sahab’s voice sets the narrative to this song which talks about the fact that a woman looks best when she is herself, without any make-up, raw uninhibited beauty is a girl's ornament. Though it's sung from a guy's perspective it’s one song that every girl can surely relate to. 04-SINGAAR KO REHNE DO CD MISC-20220626 TRACK#04 4:12 IN CONVERSATION WITH TAGORE-2016; SHREYA GHOSHAL; SHANTANU MOITRA; GUZAR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pmneCuFcfA&feature=player_embedded_uturn Shaan leads Main Ghoomta Hoon, in which Gulzar paints the imagery of a musk deer chasing its own scent. The jaunty melody has the tempo of a nursery rhyme, perfectly calibrated with flute and accordion interludes. Translated from one of Rabindranath Tagore’s very famous works “Gitanjali” by the legendary lyricist Gulzar Saab and sung by the versatile Shaan, Main Ghoomta Hoon is a song about soul searching. 05-MAIN GHOOMTA HOON CD MISC-20220626 TRACK#05 5:54 IN CONVERSATION WITH TAGORE-2016; SHAAN; SHANTANU MOITRA; GUZAR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I2QKZVYBRg 97-ANTMEIN-SIGNOFF – 1:48 DHOLKI JUGALBANDHI; NILESH PARAB & KRISHNA MUSLE ----------------------------------------------------------अंत मे छोटी सी बात ‘An Indian Morning’ की तरफसे: ---------------------------------------------------------- “It's a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” -W.
