The Wavelength
Monday October 17th, 2022 with Joe Reilly
Some new releases (from Dry Cleaning and Terje Evensen/Morten Gran) and a wide variety of music for two hours.
A wide variety of music on the Wavelength tonight including a couple of songs from new releases.
We open with two tracks from the new album by British rock group Dry Cleaning. Stumpworks continues the great musical stylings the group explored on the debut album New Long Leg - with the dry, deadpan vocals of Florence Shaw atop the great alt-rock grooves created by her bandmates Tom Dowse (guitars) , Lewis Maynard (bass) and Nick Buxton (drums.) It's a lot of fun and once again Shaw's lyrics are really intriguing and thought-provoking.
We also feature a new one from Kyp Harness and a song by Dan Mangan that reminds us that we have people/friends in our corner even when we full desperately alone with our troubles. Mangan dedicates this song to the spirit and memory of Scott Hutchison, who was the lead singer of the Scottish rock group Frightened Rabbit, until he sadly took his own life back in 2018. We then play two songs by Frightened Rabbit - one about how loneliness of depression can be overpowering and another about how men can be idiots... especially towards women.
If you find talk of suicide or sad songs to be triggering or if you are experiencing grief, anxiety or overwhelming sorrow in any way during these difficult times, please reach out to the Ottawa Distress Centre. Their phone lines are staffed 24 hours each day and you can reach them at:

Then we play a variety of songs including two from artists coming to Ottawa.

Towards the end of the last hour, we feature three pieces from a brand new album called Løvsang, by Norwegian artists Terje Evensen (drums) and Morten Gran (saxophone.) I thought perhaps Løvsang meant love song... but in fact it means leaf sound... and Løvfall means leaf fall. So this music is appropriate for what's happening to our trees at this time of year. The music on Løvsang was recorded in one, fully improvised session and really shows the amazing musical dialogue between these two musicians.
Enjoy. Take care and thanks for listening.
