The Wavelength
Monday June 13th, 2022 with Joe Reilly
An Ottawa Jazz Fest primer and a Sigur Ros conclusion

We open tonight with an artist I saw at Pique Summer down at Arts Court on Saturday night. It was a great celebration of artists willing to think and work outside the box, produced by Debaser. Great work and Circuit des Yeux was an eye-opening discovery for me. Then we move into a set of music by Meshell Ndegeocello who is appearing at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Wednesday, June 29th. This amazing artist emerged in 1993 with some big hits, but she has followed her muse and released an engaging, thought-provoking array of funk, soul and jazz-influenced songs over the years, often exploring the politics of race and sex. Enjoy the expansive sounds of Meshell in this set and check her out at the Festival. https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/meshell-ndegeocello/ https://www.allmusic.com/artist/meshell-ndegeocello-mn0000402351/biography We follow her up with some music by Busty and the Bass. The funky Montreal outfit is appearing at the Jazz Festival on Friday, June 24th. We also hear an interview with Eric Haynes of the group. https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/busty-and-the-bass/ We also hear some music from the Blind Boys of Alabama (Sunday, June 26th) and Les Filles Illighadad (also on Wednesday, June 29th) who will be performing at the Jazz Fest. https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/blind-boys-of-alabama/ https://ottawajazzfestival.com/artists/les-filles-de-illighadad/ Check out information on the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival here: https://ottawajazzfestival.com/ We wrap up the show with thirty minutes of Sigur Ros. I saw the Icelandic band at Place Des Arts in Montreal on Friday night last week. I was in nosebleed seats and wasn't sure how much I would enjoy the performance.... but it was amazing. The sound was terrific, our view of the stage was great and the band members were in amazing form. It was just the four men making incredible music for two sets that were about 75 minutes long and it all ended with the 3 songs featured on the show tonight. It was another mind-blowing experience of Sigur Ros for me. https://sigurros.com Enjoy.

As a denouement for any On Demand listeners, I've included the closing track from Sigur Ros's live album Inni. It is not a live track but a beautiful ambient piece. You need a way to recover from three gigantic songs back to back to back. Enjoy.
