A tribute to CKCU programmer Janis Lockwood and an interview with Shad about his album A Short Story About A War (and the state of the world)

On the show tonight we open with a musical tribute to Janis Lockwood. Janis was a long time host/programmer here at CKCU and she also was the coordinator for CKCU's annual public funding drive for many years. Janis produced her last show on air in October of 2019 and sadly she died late last week from cancer. Janis was a passionate person about music and about CKCU. She loved this station and she loved to share music with others over the airwaves and through her friendships and connections here at CKCU. She LOVED supporting and playing the music of local musicians. When I spoke to her last month and asked her if she could assemble some of her favourite songs for me, she said "Just keep playing local music, Joe. Make sure people know about our local musicians because they need a lot of support right now." She was always thinking of others and will be greatly missed. The first 40 minutes of the program are dedicated to Janis with some of her favourite music featured - and some artists that make me think of Janis. Thanks for everything Janis! If you would like to listen to some of Janis's incredible shows - and if you'd like to learn about amazing roots music and local music - check out her On Demand library here: https://cod.ckcufm.com/programs/106/index.html?filter=all Following the tribute to Janis, we dig into Shad's 2018 album A Short Story About A War. This incredibly rich album is like a panorama snapshot of the chaotic and troubled world we live in. It takes a few listens to take it all in and tonight Shad guides us through the process of making it and how he hopes people have been connecting with it. The album is almost two years old and with its themes around the environment, rampant capitalism, the military industrial complex, poverty and race relations ... well it seems even more relevant today with the pandemic crisis and protests in Canada and the US about anti-black racism and brutal police treatment of marginalized communities. We talk to Shad about all of these themes in a far-ranging and thoughtful discussion and we play A Short Story About A War in its entirety. https://www.shadk.com/ Check out Shad's very thoughtful response to Donald Trump's bible holding tear gas stunt here: https://www.instagram.com/shadkmusic/ The Insta story begins with: "A certain world leader held up a book today for a photo op..." Join us for a very emotional and intense evening of music and words.

Janis was a mentor to me during my decade at CKCU (1981-1991). I used to listen to her shows, then was her op. during the news magazine program "Twelve O'clock Our Time", She was always find, patient, and interested. Last time I saw her was August 2014, as I dropped by the station, and she invited me to sit in with her for a couple of segments. She is missed already.

Thank you for this Joe. Indeed it is a huge loss. Janis was one of the kindest, gentlest, peaceful souls i have ever met. And an excellent huger. We will miss her badly. RIP Sister.

Not usually a fan of entire albums on the radio but enjoying this one. Good to have Shad's commentary too.
