Splendid Isolation IV: An Hour of Quiet and an Hour Alone (sort of)

For the fourth edition of Splendid Isolation we start off exploring some quiet musical territory, although it's not all minimalist or ambient... it's sometimes rhythmic and even a bit psychedelic (maybe?) with Damien Jurado. For the second hour we explore songs about being alone. The songs range from celebrating being on your own to that devastating sense of loneliness one can feel when isolated or simply missing another person. The set moves into positive territory with Magical Cloudz reminding us that "no one has to be afraid of being loved," and Lori McKenna tells us that we humans aren't really meant to be on our own. Finally Ottawa's John Punch Band and the ever-positive Michael Franti tell us that we are not alone - that we are connected to people out there in many ways. (Although during he set, one of the most interesting songs comes from Jon Brooks where he questions whether or not we are truly "connected" to one another through computers and social media.) Finally, we wrap up the show with the very positive reflections of two rappers. Common takes us through the positive elements of his life while Halifax's Classified encourages us to bury the hatchet, settle grudges and apologize when necessary.... before the day is done!
