Through the viewfinder: two visual art exhibitions on now

First, Monique Fuller and Dominic Chenier join me to talk about See Me Now 2021. The exhibit features the artwork of 11 BIPOC Ottawa artists working across a range of disciplines including painting, sculpture, fashion, and illustration. Ranging from street scenes to childhood memories, the work surmounts stereotypes that have become more apparent and impossible to ignore in the wake of the pandemic. This ensemble of artists has come together to create a community where artists can work and share their ideas and experiences. The exhibition features work by a diverse group of artists such as An Nguyen, Allan Andre, China Doll, David D. Pistol, Dominic Chenier, Don Kwan, Jovita Odegua Akahome, Fatuma Kou, Peter Purdy, Zainab Hussain, and Zara Ansar. The virtual exhibition will start in November and will give visitors a chance to learn more about the art and artists. Check out OBAK.ca for more information. Then, artist Shirley Yik joins me to talk about "It's the Economy, an exhibition of her work now on at the Trinity Gallery (Shenkman Arts Centre) until November 23, 2021. Yik's work examines the prevailing narratives of economic growth, fuelled by the cycle of mass production and consumption, in the context of the Anthropocene, and the impact they have on our relations with each other and with nature. Check out ShenkmanArts.ca for more information and visiting hours. A note to our listeners: the CKCU annual funding drive kicks off today.
