Mark Hollis, founder of the English band Talk Talk, passed away this week. He was 64. Talk Talk were a successful band in the UK, starting out as somewhat of a post-new wave pop band, often compared to Duran Duran, with whom they toured. They soon outstripped that early sound (and that association) and became more sophisticated, musically and lyrically. Spirit of Eden, their 1988 album, is considered a masterwork, and defies easy description -- you'll have no trouble finding many accounts of its beauty and lasting impact online. After a one-off solo album in the early 90s, Hollis left music at the end of that decade to dedicate his time to family. 20 years on his music remains uniquely moving and influential -- highly recommended if you're unfamiliar with it... |
