Established in 2000 in Ottawa, Canada, Jaku Konbit’s purpose is to project, protect and promote the African cultural identity and personality everywhere and at all times. Being a pro-active African-centered organization, Jaku Konbit looks first to the rich traditions and cultural expressions of Africa and the Caribbean for inspiration, justification and examples for its ideology, activities and programs. The organization is African-centered in that it views all peoples of African heritage to share a similar culture, history and experiences spread over many continents and possessing wonderful diversity. In the spirit of being a voice for black children and youth, the organization commits itself to providing information, program materials, and services pertaining to the physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs and development of our children and youth.
Jaku Konbit has been actively involved in the African and Caribbean community in the National Capital Region and has worked very closely with a number of community organizations, such as the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, YMCA, Ottawa Police Youth Division, Ottawa Community Arts Association, Jamaica Ottawa Community Association (JOCA), Sickle Cell Parents Support Group of Ottawa (SCPSG), Ottawa Families Shelter, Nigerian Ottawa Association (NOA), CKCU and CHUM FM radio stations, Black History Ottawa (BHO), ACCESO International, Educational for Higher Learning and Development (AHEAD), Michele Heights Community Centre, and many other organizations.
